Fasting and Skin Detox: Myth or Fact? Here’s the Doctor’s Explanation and Tips

Jakarta – Many people believe that fasting is not only beneficial for overall health but can also help detoxify the skin. But is it true that fasting can make your skin healthier?

Aesthetic doctor Dara Ayuningtyas explained that fasting can indeed support the skin’s detoxification process, but only under certain conditions. She shared this insight during a press conference held by ZAP at the Atrium of Senayan City Mall in Jakarta on Friday (March 6, 2026).

According to Dr. Dara, fasting essentially involves reducing food intake for several hours. This condition can give the body time to carry out its natural detoxification processes.

“It’s actually true, but only if it’s done the right way,” said Dr. Dara Ayuningtyas, Dipl. AAAM.

However, Dr. Dara pointed out that many people fail to experience detox benefits during fasting because of unhealthy eating habits when breaking the fast.

She explained that common iftar foods often include fried snacks and overly sweet dishes. Unfortunately, these types of foods can trigger various skin problems.

“During Ramadan, people usually break their fast with fried foods and sugary items, so the detox effect disappears,” she said.

Foods high in sugar and oil can trigger inflammation in the skin, increase oil production, and lead to acne.

To ensure fasting truly helps maintain skin health, Dr. Dara recommends paying close attention to food choices when breaking the fast. According to her, nutrient-rich meals can help keep the skin healthy while supporting the body’s detoxification process.

“It’s better to choose the right nutrients when breaking the fast, such as fruits and vegetables, while reducing carbohydrate intake,” she explained.

Fruits and vegetables contain vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that are highly beneficial for the skin. These nutrients help maintain skin hydration, fight free radicals, and keep the skin looking fresh and healthy.

With the right dietary habits, fasting can actually become an opportunity to improve lifestyle and skin health. Reducing oily foods, limiting excessive sugar, and increasing the intake of nutritious foods can help the skin look healthier throughout the month of Ramadan.
