Unique! This 40-Year-Old Café Serves Giant Iced Coffee That Doesn’t Dilute for 3 Hours

Jakarta – A legendary café in Japan has managed to survive for more than 40 years. Its secret lies in a unique way of serving iced coffee using a giant coffee ice block.

Many modern cafés offer various coffee creations using advanced espresso machines. Innovative coffee recipes make coffee lovers keep coming back for more.

However, amid the modernization of coffee shops, some classic cafés still maintain their charm. Especially those that have been operating for decades with their own distinctive style.

In Japan, several old coffee shops have continued to survive with simple concepts for decades. One of them remains popular thanks to its unique iced coffee presentation.

According to the Instagram account @or__and (Feb 24, 2026), Café Mu has been operating in Japan for around 40 years. The café is run by an elderly owner who manages the shop by himself.

Located in the Motomachi area, the café is only about a three-minute walk from Motomachi-Chukagai Station. Its classic atmosphere attracts coffee lovers who are curious about its unusual coffee serving method.

When a customer orders iced coffee, the owner opens the freezer and takes out a large block of frozen coffee. The ice block is then placed into a glass.

Freshly brewed black coffee is poured into the same glass. Customers can also request cream to make the drink smoother and creamier.

What makes this method special is the type of ice used. Instead of regular water ice cubes, the ice is made entirely from coffee.

Because of this, when the ice melts, the drink does not become diluted like typical iced coffee. Instead, the coffee flavor remains strong and consistent until the last sip.

The coffee ice block is also quite large, which makes it melt very slowly. In fact, it can keep the drink cold for more than three hours.

Many visitors even refer to it as a “coffee glacier” due to its size and long-lasting chill. This kissaten-style café has also become part of Japan’s long-standing coffee culture that has existed for decades.
