Indonesian Coffee Becomes a Favorite in the United States

United States: Amid the bustling atmosphere of Washington, D.C., stands a coffee shop that brings the rich flavors of the Indonesian archipelago to America. Owned by an Indonesian couple, the café has become a local favorite for serving a wide variety of authentic Indonesian coffee. Every day, the shop is crowded with customers from morning until night.

Established in September 2019, the café was born from a simple desire: to introduce Indonesia to the world through a cup of coffee. The owners, Irvan and Vivi, said they wanted to bring something authentic from their homeland. However, their journey was not without challenges. Just six months after opening, the pandemic forced the café to temporarily close. Nevertheless, they persevered and gradually recovered, remaining in business while many others shut down.

A diverse selection of premium coffee beans is imported directly from various regions across Indonesia, including Aceh Gayo, Puntang and Pangalengan in West Java, Kamojang, Mandailing, and even rare Excelsa coffee from Central Java. The distinctive flavor profiles have become a unique attraction for coffee enthusiasts in the United States, while also serving as a cultural bridge between Indonesia and the local community.

Now, with Indonesian coffee import tariffs reduced to zero percent, the shop owners are optimistic. They hope the policy will support business sustainability and expand the distribution of Indonesian coffee in the American market. In a corner of Washington, D.C., a cup of Indonesian coffee represents not only taste, but also perseverance and pride in one’s homeland.
